About this Tropical Smoothie Recipe
Tropical Smoothie’s Bahama Mama Smoothie is marked as a ‘fan favorite’ on their menu, and for a good reason. It’s a blend of strawberries and pineapple with hints of coconut and hints of white chocolate blended in.
If you’re into fruity desserts, this smoothie is for you. It’s rich and creamy, with tropical flavors that taste so indulgent, but are actually pretty healthy (much healthier than the Tropical Smoothie Café version!). Whether you're incorporating this delicious drink into your daily diet as a quick breakfast, pre or post-workout fuel, or as an afternoon snack on a hot summer day, it is a great addition to your routine.
What's even better is that this creamy Bahama Mama smoothie is just 6 simple ingredients and takes just 5 minutes to make. Simple, quick, and nutritious recipes is what I'm all about! Recipe Ingredients

- Pineapple & Strawberry - Frozen fruit will give the best consistency.
- Coconut Milk - I used Silk Unsweetened from a carton. For a richer, more decadent smoothie use coconut cream.
- Coconut Chunks - You can find these usually in the freezer section of Mejier or Trader Joe's. I know it can also be found in the fresh section of Whole Foods.
- White Chocolate Chips - The secret ingredient for a rich, creamy smoothie! You can also use white chocolate syrup instead of chips.
- Vanilla Protein Powder - The Tropical Smoothie recipe doesn’t have this, but I like to add it for extra flavor, texture, and nutrition.
See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions and Variations
- Fruit - Experiment with different frozen fruit. Banana, mango, raspberries, or dark cherries would be great options.
- Liquid - Instead of coconut milk, you can use coconut water, soy milk, almond milk. Or make it with a different fruit juice like orange juice or pineapple juice.
- Protein Powder - If you choose to add protein, play with the flavor! I used vanilla which worked well with the tropical pineapple flavor and sweet strawberries, but a coconut, tropical, or white chocolate powder I think would also be delicious. How to Make This Recipe

1. Add all of the ingredients into a high speed blender. Add the milk last *note: More milk = thinner smoothie. Less milk = thicker smoothie*.

2. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until everything is combined. Enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Start with less liquid than you think you need and add more bit by bit. This will ensure a thicker smoothie rather than a juice-like consistency.
- For best results, use a high-speed blender is crucial in order to achieve a creamy, a smooth texture. This is the Ninja high-powered blender I use.
- Frozen fruit will result in a more flavorful smoothie; however if you use fresh, add a cup of ice cubes.
Recipe FAQs
How do you sweeten a smoothie?
This smoothie is full of naturally sweet tropical fruit and the protein powder adds some sweetness too, so in my opinion no extra sweetener is needed. However, most Tropical Smoothie Cafe Smoothies are sweetened further Turbinado Sugar (fancy way to say pure cane sugar). You could add a tablespoon of sugar if you want, or add some maple syrup, honey or sugar alternative like stevia or monk fruit if your smoothie isn’t sweet enough for your liking.
Can I make it a smoothie bowl?
You will need a high powered blender and then follow the recipe as is but just use ¼ cup of liquid. This will thicken up the smoothie and make it more spoonable. It may take a little longer to blend thoroughly. To thicken your smoothie even more, also try adding ¼ an avocado, ¼ cup greek yogurt, or ½ tsp of xanthan gum.
What are the best smoothie toppings?
To me, smoothies are like a blank canvas for all sorts of tasty toppings. Some of my favorites include nuts and seeds like chia seeds, flax, hemp seeds, chopped walnuts or pecans. I also love a drizzle of nut butter or honey.
For a nice crunch I like adding cacao nibs, granola, cereal, or toasted coconut flakes. Fresh berries or dried fruit are always welcomed for an extra punch of nutrients and pop of color.
My most recent obsession though, a healthy spoonful of Oat Haus Granola Butter! You can use my code COURTNEY15 if you're looking to purchase and save some money.
Can I make Bahama Mama tropical smoothie vegan?
Absolutely! Just ensure you have vegan white chocolate chips and plant-based protein if you’re using it.
